The hammer on the right is the old one, and it shows the string line in the grooves. The string line isn't parallel with the hammer itself. This is acceptable practice with production pianos: the greater the angle, the more machining is needed. However there is a loss of tone quality, and the una corda sound isn't consistent. The hammer on the left has been drilled so that the hammer is parallel to the string.
